The Laundry Room

My thoughts on a good laundry room.

A well designed laundry room might not be on the top of your home improvement list, but it should be. It is such an important room and it really needs to be carefully thought through so that there is a place for everything.

To start with we’ve got the washing machine and the dryer, depending on space, they can go side by side or they can be stacked. Miele do a good washer-dryer stacking kit with a very convenient integrated drawer.

It is essential to have a good sized sink in here too, a perfect place to do those dirty jobs like cleaning kids shoes, or washing the dog. Good to have a gooseneck tap - so you can easily fit a bucket under the tap.

Also having some benchtop space in the laundry room to fold clothes or keep your laundry basket is helpful too. When designing laundries, I always try to include a hanging rail.

A tall cabinet to keep your ironing board, iron, broom and mop etc is good too. And of course you need easy access to laundry supplies.

Wall cabinets or open shelving are great for any overflow storage.

If space allows an underbench pull out bin and a laundry bin would also be good.

If you can, introduce an element of fun in here with a clever colour way or fun wallpaper - adding your personal flair makes it a space you enjoy working in.

At least we don’t have to boil the water in the copper pot anymore and run the clothes thru a wringer!
